BACH Weekly Newsletter - To Always Strive Upwards

BACH Weekly Newsletter

From the Desk of Rabbi Greene

Yaakov lies down to sleep as he is fleeing Eisauv. He dreams of a ladder. Angels are ascending and descending along its rungs.

Angels represent spiritual forces - a divine fire of sorts - moving up and down.

Perhaps the dream is a message to Yaakov. Hashem is telling him, “You are about to experience many challenges. You will live far from your holy parents. You will spend decades with a dishonest and conniving father-in-law. You will suffer much anguish from your children. But you will have a choice. Will these trials pull you down or will they strengthen you? Will you raise yourself through it all or will you let these hardships lower you into bitterness and sadness?”

Along these lines, a group of Reform Jews went to speak with the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt’l. They asked him his opinion of their observance level (or lack thereof!). He replied, “It doesn’t matter so much where you are on the ladder but rather what direction you are traveling upon it.”

We are all born on different rungs on the ladder of spiritual growth. This we have no control over. But the direction we move from this point is up to us. Let us all resolve to embrace whatever circumstances Hashem gives us and strive upward on the ladder of life!

A beautiful havdallah ceremony led by Aryeh on vocals and Rabbi Greene on guitar, added a truly uplifting air to the evening.
